Some Japanese Flowers
Kazumasa Ogawa
|
There is no colophon in this book. Each chromo-collotype has a thin (.5 ~ 1 cm) light color border around the image. This gives the appearance the collotype is tipped to the page. However, that is not the case. The collotype images are printed directly onto the plate. In Japan Described and Illustrated, published in 1897-8, K. Ogawa flower collotypes served as the frontispiece in each volume/section. Plates XI-XV (5) were used in sections XI-XV of the 15 section paper wrap sets of Brinkley's Japan Described and Illustrated. The first ten plates were not used in any version of that set. To see the flower collotypes used in those sets, click here. The title page describes the plates as "Collotyped." These are chromo-collotype (printed in multi-color). More information on the "chromo-collotype" process (as called the multi-pass process) that Ogawa was using is found here. For information on Kazumasa Ogawa, click here.
