British Occupation Forces Japan

These covers are from a members of the Australian contingent of the BCOF (British Commonwealth Occupation Force) stationed in Japan. The Australian contingent was the primary British Commonwealth Force to participate in the post-WWII occupation of Japan by Allied Forces.

The Australian Forces first began occupation duties in mainland Japan in February of 1946 and they were completely withdrawn some 6 years later. The Australian forces were located primarily in Hiroshima Prefecture and Yamaguchi prefecture (Iwakuni).

Australian military forces never had a large presence in Japan. By the end of 1947 the strength was estimated to be approximately 16,000 personnel but by March of 1950 the strength had dropped to less than 3,000.

Stanley Gibbons notes that the BCOF stamps were first issued in October of 1946 and that “Use Ceased on 12 February 1949”.

BCOF stamps are Scott - Australia M1-M7, Stanley Gibbons - Australia-BCOF (Japan) J1-J7 and the Japanese Stamp Specialized Catalog (JSCA) O1-O7.
