Commodore M. C. Perry High Quality Lithograph
Price. ~ Sold ~.
Condition.
The lithograph is in Good condition. It is evenly aged/browned. The image area is relatively clean and free of foxing and staining. There is staining and foxing in the margins. The upper right corner is missing and there are three tears on the right side, one extending slightly into the image area. The other two are in the margin only. The bottom left corner is bent. There is a marginal tear at the top and foreign matter adheres at the top middle. Two mounting tapes remain affixed at the top to the back. The back is heavily browned. While the margins are definitely very rough, the image area is nice and the image would frame up well.
Description.
I am not aware of the source of this lithograph. It does not have the customary lettering which would indicate the lithographer. However, it is a higher quality hand colored lithograph. The lithograph appears to be almost identical to a woodcut engraving that appeared in the March 18, 1858 issue Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper accompanying an article regarding Perry's death. I believe that this is an image of Commodore Perry during the period after his return from the Expedition to Japan (1854) and his death in 1858. I do not have sufficient information to determine when the lithograph was actually created but suspect it was contemporaneous (ie ca 1858 or earlier).
