Condition. The book is in Very Good condition. Spine is faded and the corners and head and foot of the spine are bumped and lightly frayed. Edges have scrapped areas. Pictorial owner's bookplate inside the front cover. Light foxing to the first 15 pages but after that very clean. Front hinged cracked and the back hinge is starting to crack.

Cruise of the Marchesa to Kamschatka and New Guinea with Notices of Formosa, Liu-Kiu & Various Islands of the Malay Archipelago(Volume 1), London, John Murray, 1886, (1st Edition), one hand-colored lithographed frontispieces (bird), 5 maps (most are colored; one is multifold), 10 full page black and white plates and 42 woodcut text illustrations, Volume 1 - 284 pp, 8vo (6 3/4 x 9 in) bevelled edges, gilt spine lettering, covers with gilt cursive lettering and a circular vignette with a ship in the middle surrounded by leafy branches, grey endpapers. The account of a British natural history expedition (focus on birds) aboard a 420 ton auxiliary screw schooner yacht Marchesa from January 1882 through April 1884. The Marchesa visited Formosa, Ryukyu Islands, Kamchatka, Bering Islands, Sulu Archipelago, Celebes, the Moluccas and New Guinea. Includes section on "Liu-Kiu" (Ryukyu Islands - Okinawa) in volume 1. Volume 1 recounts the voyage through Kamschatka. In addition to two chapters regarding Okinawa (48 pp) it contains an appendix "Notes on Liu-Kiu" of 22 pages.
