Recollections of Baron Gros's Embassy to China and Japan in 1857-8, London & Glasgow, Richard Griffin and Company, 1860, 12mo (5 x 7 3/8 in), maroon blind stamped cloth with gilt emblem (dragon and flags) on front cover and gilt title on spine, 4 tinted lithographic plates, 368 pp. This book is an important early account of Japan and China in the period immediately following the opening of Japan by Commodore Perry. It is a translation of the original French edition published the same year which presented a chronological account of this significant French diplomatic mission to China and Japan by the Baron Gros. The major portion of the book deals with mission (embassy) to China at the height of the Opium wars. Includes accounts of the bombardment of Canton, Lord Elgin, Macao, Shanghai, Nagasaki and the Dutch factory at Decima. The diplomatic mission to Japan is covered in the last two chapters. Gros arrived in Japan in mid-September, 1858 and concluded a treaty with the Japanese on October 9.
