Moges, Marquis de:
Souvenirs d'une Ambassade en Chine et au Japon en 1857 et 1858, Paris, Librairie de L. Hachette et Cie, first edition, 1860, 12mo (4 3/4 x 7 1/4 in - 12 x 18 cm), hard bound or paper wraps, French language, no illustrations, 350 pp. This book is an important early account of Japan and China in the period immediately following the opening of Japan by Commodore Perry. It is the original French edition which presented a chronological account of this significant French diplomatic mission to China and Japan by the Baron Gros. The major portion of the book deals with the mission (embassy) to China at the height of the Opium wars. Includes accounts of the bombardment of Canton, Lord Elgin, Macao, Shanghai, Nagasaki and the Dutch factory at Decima. The diplomatic mission to Japan is covered in the last two chapters. Gros arrived in Japan in mid-September, 1858 and concluded a treaty with the Japanese on October 9.
