These lithographs are from Graphic Scenes of the Japan Expedition by Wm Heine, Artist of the Expedition, New York, G. P. Putnam & Company, 1856, ten lithographs by Sarony & Company. For more information these lithographs, click here.
The lithographs were issued in two formats which I call Deluxe format and Regular format:
- Deluxe Format lithographs were issued as a protfolio of loose plates. These lithographs are on Bristol board and were enhanced by adding additional colors by hand. The Bristol board can be identified by the thickness and the fact that the back is glossy.
- Regular Format lithographs were issued in book format. These are on much thinner paper which has a dull/matt type finish on both sides..

The measurements of the image size shown below include the image frame box that surrounds the image.
In describing condition I refer to the "lithograph plate" and the "lithograph" and note condition. Except for Nos. 3 & 4, the lithographs were printed separately and then tipped onto the Bristol board or thick paper.
Deluxe Format - Individual Lithographs

Condition/ Comments:
The lithograph plate is in Good+ condition. On the front and back there is moderate soiling and staining, primarily around the edges. The bottom right corners are bent/creased and chipped. There are a few small tears and nicks on the edges. The back is clean. The lithograph itself is in Very Good condition with no foxing or staining in the image area.
Note that on this print the title is spelled "Wampoa" Pagoda. The title is also found spelled "Whampoa" Pagoda with an "h" added. It is my experience that the Deluxe format lithographs are missing the "h" in the title and the Regular format lithographs have the "h" in the title.

Condition/ Comments:
The lithograph plate is in Good condition. On the front and back there is light soiling and staining, primarily around the edges. There is a 1 cm tear at the bottom of the right margin and two similar size tears at the middle of the left margin. The back is clean. The lithograph itself is in Very Good condition with no foxing or staining in the image area. The plate has been trimmed approximately 1 1/2 inches along the bottom. On the front there are two areas on the edge with linen tape which extends 1 cm into the margin. On the back there are four areas along the edge with the linen tape. The upper right and left corners on the back have the glossy layer of the paper missing (2.5 x 3 cm).
Note that on this print the title is spelled "Wampoa" Pagoda. The title is also found spelled "Whampoa" Pagoda with an "h" added. It is my experience that the Deluxe format lithographs are missing the "h" in the title and the Regular format lithographs have the "h" in the title.

All the corners are soft and creased. The upper right corner has a heavy 2 x 9 cm crease. There is a similar size but lighter crease in the bottom left corner. There are a few small tears and nicks on the edges. The back is clean. The lithograph itself is in Very Good condition with no foxing or staining in the image area. This is the only lithograph in this series that depicts a scene from Okinawa. It is seldom seen.

Condition/ Comments: The lithograph plate is in Good condition. On the front there is light soiling and staining, primarily around the edges. The plate has been trimmed approximately 2 inches along each margin, apparently for mounting. The back is clean. The lithograph itself is in Very Good condition with no foxing or staining in the image area. The plate is mounted in an archival mounting with white archival quality linen tape attached at two places on the back to hold it to the mount.

On the back there is light staining and soiling over the entire area. The lithograph itself is in Very Good condition with only minor foxing which is primarily outside the image area.

Condition/ Comments: The lithograph plate is in Good condition. There is heaving staining and soiling in the margins. On the back there is heavy staining and soiling over the entire area and pencil marking. The lithograph itself is in Very Good condition with no foxing. This lithograph has hand coloring added. The most noticeable color is the blue. For a comparison with a non-color added lithograph (book), click here. The back of the plate is not glossy as normally found on the Deluxe (folio) lithographs. It is possible that the plate was skinned from a Deluxe plate. It is also possible that the hand coloring was added later. The color is consistent with that found on the Deluxe lithographs There is no lettering on the plate or lithograph and it appears that it was removed from the original plate and remounted. The plate has been trimmed 1~2 inches on all sides.

The lithograph itself is in Very Good condition with no foxing. There is a crease in the lithograph that starts at the bottom and runs approximately 1/2 the way up the image. This is about 1/4 the distance from the left margin and passes to the left of the adult holding a fan. The bottom right corner is chipped and the top right corner has been trimmed.

There is a large 3.6 cm repaired tear at the top edge in the middle. The top left corner is badly chipped and the other three corners are all chipped. The lithograph itself is in Very Good condition with no foxing. There are several small tears (less than 2 cm) along the edges.
