~~ Book Set 1895080616 ~~Fables Choisies de Florian
Volumes 1 & 2, 1895
Volume 1
Volume 2
Condition. Both books are in Very Good condition. The covers, front and back - inner and outer, are moderately stained and soiled. This condition is probably caused by the adhesive used to apply the folded pages forming the covers to an inner stiffener paper. There is pencil writing on the inside of the front cover of Volume 1. Following the covers and adjacent pages, the books are in Fine condition with no staining, foxing, marking or soiling. All pages are uncut/unsevered at the fold and there are no tears to the pages. A solid and well preserved pair of books.

Fables Choisies de Florian. De J.-P. Claris, De Florian, Illustree Par Des Artistes Japonais Sous La Direction De P. Barboutau, Tokio, Volumes 1 & 2, Paris, Librairie Marpon & Flammarion, E. Flammarion Succ., "Imprime par la compagnie de Shueisha a Tokio," Meiji 28 (1895), small 8vo (6 x 8 in - 15 x 20.1 cm), crepe paper folded sheets, spine covered, silk string ties, text in French, 56 pages total (each volume) including the covers (28 folded pages). In each volume there there are 24 numbered pages of text and fourteen double page color woodblock prints. The fourteen double page plates (28 pp) and the front and back covers (4 pages) are not numbered. The front covers are a single page color woodblock print. The cover woodblock print and the 14 internal double page woodblock prints all have the artist's seal (han). In total the two books contain 112 pages which include 28 double page color woodblock prints and 48 numbered pages of text. There are 38 (18 in volume 1 and 20 in volume 2) small text type black and white woodcut illustrations of birds, animals and plants interspersed throughout the book. The front covers are nicely illustrated in color. The back covers have two small decorative illustrations (crests). While the front and back covers are folded pages, they are affixed over a stiff but pliable inner piece. This makes the front and back folded pages (covers) much firmer than the internal folded pages which are not reinforced.
