Process of Printing Wood Engraving

Type I Covers

Type II Covers

Unso-do Co. (Publisher):
Process of Printing Wood Engraving, Kyoto, 8vo (7 x 9 1/4 in - 17.5 x 23.8 cm), not dated but believed to be ca 1956, paper over cardboard boards, paste on title on front board, no text, accordion/fold-out style booklet with pages jointed at the outer edge, 13 pages attached at the fore-edge, 26 pages total. This book illustrates the color woodblock printing process using a Utamaro Kitagawa woodblock known as "Waitress Okita from the Naniwaya Tearoom." The image shows a woman holding a tea cup.

I have examined this book with two different covers. I have designated the plain covers as Type I. I have designated the book with decorated/illustrated covers Type II. The woodcuts are identical in both books.

The pages are not numbered. The first page after the title page is the completed woodblock print and the page to the right is outline of the printing. After the key block plate (outline of the printing), the left page has the next woodblock impression applied and the page to the right shows the cumulative state of the print. The woodblock progresses from the outline/key block through the application of 11 additional woodblock impressions. In total the plate is created by using 12 woodblocks (key block and 11 additional blocks).

The front of the first page has a woodblock printed title identical to the paste on label on the front board. I have examined a copy of a book with the Type I cover that had a paste on label stating, "Published by Unso-Do Co., Teramachi, Nizyo, Kyoto" inside of the back cover. I have examined a Type II cover book which did not have this label. That book had the following inscription:

.... With Compliment,/T. Kondo/The Red Lantern Shop/Kyoto.

The book sometimes has an accompanying 12 page pamphlet is titled "The Japanese Wood-Print." The pamphlet (12mo - 5 1/4 x 7 1/2 in - 13.1 x 19 cm) has decorated paper wraps and is string tied. The text and illustrations are on folded pages. However, this pamphlet is generally not present with the book.
