Ous(z)i Bridge
This is a sepia/monochrome albumen photograph mounted on card. At the lower left etched in white in the negative is "OUS(Z)INO - OUS(Z)IBASHI" (Ouzi Bridge). The photograph measures 3 3/4 x 5 1/2 in - 9.6 x 14 cm and the card mount measures 6 1/2 x 8 in - 16.3 x 20 cm. I believe this photograph dates from the mid-1870s. On the back, written in pencil is "E.P. Bennett. This item came with stereoview cards from a series called "Summer in Japan" produced by by H.H. Bennett of Kilbourn City, Wisconsin. The pictures on these cards were take by William Metcalf when he visited Japan in 1876/1877. I believe it is possible that Metcalf purchased this photographs while in Japan and it ended up in H.H. Bennett's hands. Of course this is pretty much speculation but the photograph does have the appearance of the 1870-early 1880s albumen photographs produced in Japan.
