Keeling's Guide to Japan, Yokohama, Tokio, Hakone, Fujiyama, Kamakura, Yokoska, Kanozan, Narita, Nikko, Kioto, Osaka, Kobe &c., &c., Together with Useful Hints, History, Customs, Festivals Roads &c., &c., with Ten Maps, Fourth Edition, Revised and Enlarged by A. Farsari [Second Issue], Yokohama, A. Farsari for sale by Kelly & Walsh Limited, 1890, 18mo (4 1/2 x 6 1/3 in - 11.4 x 16.1 cm), green (also red) cloth, gilt lettering on front board, 10 maps/plans (2 with color), 1 text illustration, numerous tables, 15 pages of advertisements in the rear and 5 pages of advertisements in the front, 164 pp. The detailed tourist guidebook is divided into nine routes. Many routes are further broken down into 3 or more subsections ("trips"). Detailed information associated with the various trips is provided and this is supplemented by maps and plans. The map of "The Bluff of Yokohama" is of particular interest because it shows individual structures with numbers. This guide is an invaluable resource to Japan in the early to mid-1890. It was produced and printed by A. Farsari, a firm that is probably best know for the sale of hand colored albumen photographs in the Yokohama tourist trade. The books contains an advertisement by the Farsari studio ("Best Photographs of Views and Costumes of Japan, A. Farsari, No. 16 Bund") and small insert slip offers the purchaser of the guide a free sketch map of the roads described in the guide by calling at the Farsari studio near the Grand Hotel. The last free page contains a text advertisement by Farsari dated January 1, 1887. In it the Farsari studio explains that because of the fire of February 1886 all negatives were destroyed and because of this Mr. Farsari embarked on a five month tour taking photographs. The advertisement boasts of the quality of the studio's photographs and hand coloring. Time has proven that the advertisement was not mere puffing and the Farsari photographs are widely recognized as among the highest quality of the Yokohama tourist trade photographs. The book also contains an advertisement for a competitor of the Farsari studio, K. Kimbei, No. 7, Honcho Ichome, Yokohama.
This book is an important resource for those interested in 19th century albumen photographs with Japanese views. Many of those photographs contain descriptive captions. This book was produced by a photograph seller and dates to the period when many of these images were taken and marketed. Often the locations noted in the captions on these photographs can be found in the maps/plans and text found in this book.
