"Upright against God" - A Sketch of the Early Life of Joseph Hardy Neesima, Boston, D. Lorthrop Company, 16mo (5 x 6 1/2 in - 12.5 x 16.3 cm), 1890, red cloth spine extending onto 1/2 of the covers, balance of the covers in decorative pattern, gilt lettering on front cover, tissue guard protected frontispiece photograph of Handy Neesima and his family, 5 other full page plates from photographs, 1 plate reproducing Neesima's han/seal, 52 pp. The introduction (pages 1-20) is dated 1890 but the remainder of the book (pages 21-52) is dated 1867. All plates are black and white and printed in halftone. This book was published after Neesima's death the same year it was published. While the illustrations deal with his life after returning to Japan, the bulk of the book relates to his life in America. The Mckeen sisters were close acquaintances of Neesima at Andover and Phebe Fuller McKeen was the teacher of a Sabbath School he attended.
