Condition. The book is in Good+ condition. The binding is solid and the book is absolutely complete. The cover fabric is lightly faded. The beveled edges show moderate to heavy wear with the fabric broken or missing in spots. All corner tips are frayed. The back cover has an area 8 cm long by 1 cm high at the bottom near the foredge where the fabric is missing and the underlying board is gouged. All descriptive caption tissue guards are present. A few are winkled. The interior has moderate to light foxing. However, it seldom intrudes into the image area. The first frontisplate (Haiden of Shrine of Iyemitsu) has two vertical creases. Both creases are just outside the woodblock print which is tipped to plate. One collotype plate has a vertical crease near the spine area and off the image.

The 59 pages of text discuss the subject of the plates. Each plate is preceded by a tissue guard with a letter press printed descriptive title/caption. The book does not have a title page. On the last page of text (page 59), the imprint "Printed at the 'Japan Gazette' Office, Yokohama, Japan" is found. This 49 plate version of the book. The title page carries the "Kelly and Walsh, Yokohama, Shanghai, Hong-Kong, Singapore" imprint.

The collotype plates are printed directly onto medium thickness card stock paper. The color plate(s) is tipped to page on slightly thicker card stock paper.

Sometimes this book is described as having 58 pages of text. The last numbered text page is 58 and it precedes plate 46. However, there is a final unnumbered text page before the last plate (plate 47).

There is a 49 plate version of this book which carries the "Kelly and Walsh, Yokohama, Shanghai, Hong-Kong, Singapore" imprint on the title page. The key distinctions of this version are:
