Famous Castles and Temples of Japan
by K. Ogawa, Photographer
Condition. The book is in Very Good condition. The glue from the paste down title label on the front cover is smudged outside the label. The spine is lightly sunned and has minor chipping. Internally the plates are clean and in Very Good+ condition. A very few of the plates have chipped/broken corners but no plates have tears or foxing or toning. There is a manuscript gift inscription in English and Japanese dated September 27, 1899 from an "M. Kojima" on a front free page.
Ogawa, Kazumasa:
Famous Castles and Temples of Japan by K. Ogawa, Photographer, Tokyo, Kelly and Walsh, Yokohama, HongKong, Shanghai and Singapore, Sole Agents, Meiji 31 (1898), large 4to (10 3/8 x 14 3/4 in - 26.4 x 37.4 cm), decorated green cloth over thin boards, two blue string ties, paste on title in black and gilt, gilt speckled end papers, all edges gilt, loose tissue guards between the plates, title page, list of plates (Nos. 1-35), 35 hand colored collotype plates, Japanese language colophon, all pages printed on one side only. Each plate has an English language descriptive caption printed on the plate directly below the image.
I have seen this book listed with a date of 1895 and with 36 plates. Wenckstern references the book as undated and with 36 plates. It is possible the book was published earlier (ca 1895) and perhaps only with black and white collotype plates.
