Ogawa, K. (Kazumasa) Costumes & Customs in Japan in Phototype and From Photographic Negatives Taken by Him, Tokyo, K. Ogawa, large 4to (11 1/2 x 16 in - 30 x 40.5 cm), c1893-1895 (Meiji 28), decorated card covers, string ties, 12 black and white collotypes on heavy paper stock and each protected by a tissue guard with no text or lettering. Some covers contain the working "In Phototype" (Type Ia & Type II) and others use the wording "In Collotype" (Type I). The term phototype is the same as collotype. The collotype plates generally have the descriptive title printed directly on the plate below the image. However, I have seen a book with the type Ia cover where the descriptive title is printed in letter press on the tissue guard and does not appear on the plate. I have examined this book assembled in two formats. Japanese style reading back to front and European style reading front to back. The cover design is the same as found other Ogawa collotype books of this period (stylized scale pattern with waves in silver). The book that was assembled Japanese style carried the Ogawa address (No. 1 Iidamachi Shichome, Kojimachiku) and the price of "2.50 Yen" in the front cover title. Both of these were omitted in the version that reads front to back. The front to back version used the term collotype instead of phototype. The plate content of both versions is the same. These books did not contain a colophon actually printed on the covers or accompanying pages. In a version reading front to back, I have found a Japanese language colophon on a separate insert sheet dated Meiji 28 (1895). A copy of that insert is below. Wenckstern first lists this set (2 volumes) as published during the 1891-3 time period. Because the vast majority of these books do not have the colophon insert, it generally is not possible to date them with precision. However, I believe that the books with the cover title reading "In Phototype" and the descriptive titles on the tissue guard (not the collotype plate) are the earlier printings (ca 1893).
