Imperial University of Tokyo

The preface is by K. Ogawa and dated March, 1900, Tokyo. In the preface, Ogawa states that the book was "...sent to the International Exhibition at Paris." Each plate contains a single image (except for the first 8 plates and the observatory plate) and has a descriptive caption below the image. The majority of the plates are black and white but some appear to be tinted green or perhaps printed in green and white. The plates with the green color tend to be images where there is a significant amount of foliage. The plates are not numbered in the book and there is no plate listing. The number of plates in this book (59) has been confirmed complete as per the same book in library holdings. The first 8 plates present numerous cameo portraits of high officials and professors. Each of these plates is preceded by a tissue guard with the name and position of the person pictured. The tissue guard captions are positioned directly over the portrait of the person and you can see the image of the individual through the tissue guard. The first plate shows the then current (1900) President, D. Kikuchi and four Ex-Presidents (H. Watanabe, H. Hato, A. Hamao and M. Toyama). The centerpiece illustration in this book is a four panel fold-out panorama of the University. The panorama is composed of two facing pages, each with a fold-out panel. When the book is opened to these facing plates and the right and left fold-outs are opened you have the full four panel spread which depicts the following areas of the University (from left to right): 1) College of Engineering, 2) Institutes of Zoology and Geology, College of Sciences, 3) Front view of the Colleges of Law and Literature and 4) Library. The fold-out portions are attached at the back to the anchor plates by linen type tape. Fully opened the panorama measures 26.5 x 56 cm. Wenckstern records this book in Volume II (1894-1906) in these terms: University, Imperial, in Tokyo (yen 7.50). (Wenckstern, Volume II, page 10). A two part/volume set with the same title was published by Ogawa in 1904. That set contains a total of 105 plates. For information on Kazumasa Ogawa and his books, click here.
