Ogawa, Kazumasa: Illustrated Companion to Murray's Japan Guide-Book, Tokyo, K. Ogawa, distributed by Kelly & Walsh, Limited, Yokohama, Shanghai, Hong Kong and Singapore, 12mo (7 1/2 x 3 5/8 in - 13.6 x 9.3 cm), 1894, horizontal format, red cloth with gilt lettering on front cover, unpaginated, 100 black and white halftone plates. Each plate printed on a separate page and accompanied by a descriptive title and a reference to the page in the Murray Guide-Book (4th edition - published in 1894 also) that it pertains to. The image area of the plates measures 5 3/4 x 3 1/2 in - 19 x 12.8 cm). The title page describes the plates as "photo-engraved." The printing process employed is that which is now know as halftone printing. Kazumasa Ogawa is best know for his labor intensive collotype printing of photographic images. I believe that the book Ayame-san, A Japanese Romance of the 23rd Year of Meiji (1890) published ca. 1892 was his first significant venture into halftone printing. That book employed a very high quality form of halftone printing (Meisenbach process). For more information on that book, click here. This book seems to mark a transition from the high quality halftone process to the faster and less expensive, but lower quality, traditional halftone printing process. I view this book as Kazumasa Ogawa's first significant entry into the mass marketing of photographic images. For information on Kazumasa Ogawa, click here.
