The Perry Mission to Japan 1853-4, |
The Perry Mission to Japan 1853-1854 Curzon Press Summary of the Publication: The year 2003 will mark the 150th anniversary of United States Navy Commodore Matthew Perry's first visit to Japan in July 1853, having been instructed by his government to 'open up' Japan by putting in place a treaty of 'peace and amity' with the Japanese 'mikado' for the benefit of western trade and commerce. He returned in February the following year for final approval and signature to what became the Treaty of Kanagawa. As a result, a profound change in the world order was put in place and Japan's historically suspicious and withdrawn relationship with the so-called 'outside world' was to change forever. This collection of largely contemporary volumes has been selected by Professor W.G. Beasley, doyen of Bakufu and Meiji Studies, to best reflect the issues, focus and mind-set informing the Mission and its raison d'tre, the nature and character of the man who led it - Commodore Matthew Calbraith Perry - as well as the experience and logistics of the Mission itself as a U.S. navy project. Care has also been taken to provide input from a Japanese point of view regarding the immediate impact and implications of the Mission within the political and social structure of Japan. |
