Postage to Destinations Outside the United States

This page discusses postal charges for International destinations (excluding US Military System ie. APO/FPO).

As of 2023 US Postal Services rates for international mail have increased significantly.
In most instances first class mail is not an available option because of the size and weight of an items. Except for letter size envelopes, often the only option is Priority Mail.

Using Japan as an example.

First Class letter size envelopes (Size up to 15 in x 12 in x .75 in). $7 - $16. (generally not available on larger/heavier items)

Flat Rate Priority Mail Envelope (Size 12 1/2 x 9.5 in - max 4 lbs). $45.00

Flat Rate Express Mail Envelope (Size 12 1/2 x 9.5 in - max 4 lbs). $76.00

Priority Mail Packages:

Priority Mail International - Medium Flat Rate Box (13-5/8" x 11-7/8" x 3-3/8" or 11" x 8-1/2" x 5-1/2" in, max 20 lbs). $97.00

Priority Mail International - Large Flat Rate Box (23-11/16" x 11-3/4" x 3" or 12" x 12" x 5-1/2" in, max 20 lbs. $121.00

Priority Mail International - (Not Flat Rate box - max. length 60", max. length plus girth combined 108"). $100.00 and up

The US Postal Service Postage Rate Calculator is here.

In summary, except for small envelope mail, international postage starts at $45.00 and generally ranges up to $120.00. While weight is important, it is not controlling. For example, a single light mounted photograph (say 5 oz packed - 11 x 14 in) or small book may require a large package ( 12+ x 14+ x .25 inch) could cost as much as $97.00 to ship. This does not include the cost of insurance which is an additional charge.

For stamps, photographs and books, purchases under $350 are probably not practical with international shipping..

Customs forms are required by the US Postal Service on all envelopes and packages containing merchandise.

Based upon the size and weight of the package, I will quote you the best option.
