With Compliments of Geo. H. Macy & Co. |
Condition. The book is in Very Good condition. The front cover has a sunned (faded) area along the left edge It extends the full length of the cover and is approximately 1 cm wide. The photograph recessed into the front cover has medium soiling. There is minor fraying of the frabric on the edges and corners. The bottom right front corner is bent. The binding is solid and the front and back boards are firmly attached. The plates have light foxing but very little on the image area. There is moderate toning inside the front cover, on the first plate and inside the back cover.
Most of the books of this title I have examined have 40 collotype plates. I have seen the book described with 41 plates. This book has two additional plates for a total of 42. While the book is undated, I believe that it dates from the early 1900s based upon the images. Some images appear to be from the late 1890s. No publisher is stated. However, this book is very similar in nature to the same types of collotype books produced by T. Tamamura of Yokohama and his successor T. Takagi of Kobe. A few of the images in this book are found in books published by T. Tamamura. The albumen photograph tipped to the front board features a well not subject know as the "Smiling Geisha". Several photographs attributed to the T. Tamamura photographic studio in Yokohama feature this women and she is seen in books published by Tamamura.
