This Week on Okinawa
1961 - 40 Issues

Krebs, L.J. (editor):
This Week on Okinawa, Naha, Okinawa, Ryukyuan Advertising Co., 40 issues published between February 17, 1961 (Vol. 7, No. 2) and December 29, 1961 (Vol. 7, No. 47), 12mo (5 1/4 x 7 1/4 in - 13.3 x 18.2 cm), a weekly magazine, illustrated paper wraps, staple bound. While the number of pages varies, each issue is generally 70-100 pages. An excellent pictorial magazine for the U.S. military community on Okinawa. Probably the only Western language periodical of the time that documented life on Okinawa from the perspective of U.S. Forces personnel. Loaded with nostalgic ads for beers, bars and cars.

The weekly issues usually contain the following categories of news and information:

  • "Opening Gun" - Editorial comments on current events and happenings.
  • "Entertainment" - TV and movie schedules and information.
  • "Clubs" - A recap of the events in US military clubs, the American Legion, the VFW and Women's clubs.
  • "Island Activities" - News and information on recreational activities available on Okinawa.
  • "Feature" - Events of current interest, generally focused on Island personalities and military units and activities on Okinawa.
  • "Business World" - Information about the business community patronized by U.S. Forces.

I believe that issue 7:2 (February 17, 1961) marked the first issue of This Week on Okinawa. This magazine continues to be published as of 2005. This was the successor magazine to This Month on Okinawa. The last issue of that magazine was issue 7:1 (January, 1961).
