Temple at Yokuhama (Type II)
Click the picture for image of complete lithograph
In early March, 1854, a marine aboard the Mississippi died. After negotiations with the Commissioners it was arranged that he would be buried in Yokohama. The funeral took place on March 9. The place of burial was near a Japanese place of internment. A Protestant service was held. When the burial was completed, a Buddhist priest also conducted funeral ceremonies.
This lithograph is in this section of the Narrative. Perhaps this picture records preparation for the funeral as you see a casket in the right foreground.
The titles/lettering read:
- W. Heine
- J. Queen delt.
- P.S. Duval & Co. Phila.
- TEMPLE AT YOKUHAMA
This is one of the few lithographs that are not framed in a thin line box.
Condition. The lithograph is clean. Bottom edge (binding edge) is very rough. Water stain in upper right corner (outside the image area). Corners rounded.
Two differences are noted in the pictures on this lithograph. I call this one Type II. For pictures of the types recorded, click here.
