Japanese Junk

Commodore Perry arrived in Hakodadi on May 17, 1854 and remained there until June 3. He was there to negotiate the terms that would apply to US ships in that port. This is one of several lithographs from that visit showing scenes and people of Hakodadi.

There are four lithographs depicting Japanese junks in Volume I of the Narrative. This one shows an entire junk under full sail. The other three show junks or small boats in a style similar to models or plans. The Narrative notes that "More than a thousand of these vessels are occasionally seen at one time at anchor in the port of Hakodadi..."

This is another of the very few lithographs that are not drawn by W. Heine. Moffert was the artist of this picture.

The titles/lettering read:

  • Drawn by Moffert

  • Lith of SARONY & Co. New York.

  • JAPANESE JUNK
