While Perry wanted to negotiate the terms of use of Hokodate port by American ships, he was unsuccessful. The Prince of Matsmay delegated his authority to this man, Matsmai Kangasyu (Matsmai Kaneager), to deal with the Commodore. Perry never did see the Prince although he insisted on a meeting. No substantive agreements were reached as the Japanese continued to claim they were not aware of the treaty and had no authority to enter into agreements pursuant to it. Perry departed Hokodadi on June 3, 1854 after a stay of approximately two weeks.
