The Island of Formosa (Map)

This is a map of Formosa. It is in the section where Perry departs Hakodate for the return to Simoda on June 3, 1854. In his personal journal, Commodore Perry wrote:

I dispatched the Vandalia to Shanghai to relieve the Plymouth....I directed Commander Pope in the Vandalia to take the western passage to Shanghai by passing through the Strait of Sangar, the Japan Sea, and the China Gulf.

Perhaps this route took the Vandalia by Formosa and the area was surveyed and mapped. Regardless of when, Formosa was surveyed on this expedition and samples of coal were taken from there. The map is actually part of a report on the quality of a coal sample taken from Formosa.

Very clean. Binding margin with some wrinkling. Top edge brown.

Attribution: This lithograph has been positively confirmed to be from the Beverley Tucker, Senate Printing (1856), of the Narrative.
