Scenes in the Eastern Capital of Japan
Kazumasa Ogawa, 1911, 1912 & 1913

1911, 1st Edition

1912, 3rd Edition

1913, 4th Edition

Ogawa, K. (Kazumasa)
Scenes in the Eastern Capital of Japan, Tokyo (Hiyoshicho), 1911-1913, 4 editions confirmed, 4to (9 x 12 in - 23 x 30.5 cm), illustrated covers with gray cloth spine and gilt Japanese lettering, beveled edges.

  • 1st Edition, 1911. 108 unnumbered pages of black and white halftone plates, one collotype plate printed in brown.
  • 3rd Edition, 1912, 107 unnumbered pages of halftone plates (2 color, 105 black and white), no collotype plate.
  • 4th Edition, 1913, 107 unnumbered pages of halftone plates (2 color, 105 black and white), one collotype plate printed in brown.

Each halftone plates contains Japanese descriptive text in the margin and a brief English caption and they are printed front and back on the page.

An excellent view of Tokyo in the early 1900s by the renowned photographer, publisher and printer, Kasumasa Ogawa.

The 1st and 4th editions have an additional plate which is a collotype. This is a brown tone collotype plate of the Meiji Emperor and Empress. I have examined the 3rd edition and found no evidence the plate was present. I have not examined a copy of the second edition.

On the cover of the 3rd and 4th editions (perhaps the second edition), the word "Capital" is spelled with an "I" instead of an "L". The correct spelling appears on the title page.

Collotype - The Meiji Emperor and Empress of Japan
Emperor Mutsuhito and Empress Shoken (Lady Haruko)

This collotype plate of the Emperor and Empress is on heavy card stock
and die sunk. While the plate is black and white it has a brownish hue.
I have only found this plate in the 1st & 4th editions. It is not in the 3rd Edition.
