Condition.
General Comments Regarding Volumes I, II and III. All three books are in Very Good condition. The covers have wear which is primarily confined to the edges which have scraped areas. As usual, the inside front and back hinges are cracked. Throughout there are small smudges in the margins of the plates. All plates are protected by tissue guards. The condition of the spine covering is discussed below. The bindings are solid but not tight as the plates are held in place completely by the string ties and these have loosened. These books were issued with approximately 1 in of the spine covered with a silk type cloth at the top and bottom.
Specific Comments:
Volume I, Type 2. One plate (Cherry Blossoms and Jinrikisha) has a tear in starting in the right margin and extending 1 cm into the collotype image. The spine covering (top and bottom) is present but both are broken.
Volume II, Type 2. The "Tea Picking plate is inserted upside down. The top and bottom spine covering are both missing.
Volume III, Type 2. The "Cherry Blossoms at Uyeno, Tokyo" plate has a discolored area at the bottom middle and it extends into the image area. The bottom spine covering is present and the top spine covering is missing.
Tamamura, Kozaburo:
Japanese Views and Characters, Vol. III (Tokio and Nikko), ca 1910, horizontal 8vo (6 1/4 x 9 1/4 in - 16 x 24 cm), 24 hand colored collotype plates with captions in English, tissue guards, hard boards covered with fabric, spine covered, string tied, unpaginated. The type 1a & 1b books are 6 1/4 x 9 1/4 in - 16 x 24 cm. The type 2 book has different covers and title page and is slightly smaller measuring 6 x 9 in - 15.4 x 22.8 cm.
