These lithographs have signifiant differences in the pictures. To the right (25cm) of the two men in the foreground are some larger rocks. In the large format and medium format there are four rocks. On the small and medium1 format there are two. Type I has a frameline around the image. Type II does not have a frameline. Type I title is "Hong-Kong." Type II title is "HongKong."

I have noted two different types of the picture on this lithograph. The differences are in the white patterns on the awning (irregular shaped on Type I and regular shaped on Type II), the tips of the roof tiles (sharp white on Type I and dull white on Type II) and the passenger compartment being carried by the two men (small amount of white on Type I and large amount of white in Type II).

- Type I. Shaded area below the fan has a regular/uniform outer edge.
- Type II. Shaded area has a series of bumps ranging from 4 to 6 in the outer edge.
The dark accent areas to the figures right, left and below the fan vary considerably. I have broken these down into two major types with the focus on the area below the fan. The type one has a shaded area below the fan that is basically uniform with no major bumps. On type II the edges are characterized by a series of bumps or half moon protrusions. I have seen lithographs with from four two six such bumps.

There is very little difference between the lithographs. You can see that trees and stones in the wall have slightly different configurations. The first bucket on the pole appears rounded in the large format and flat in the medium and small formats.

Several types have been reviewed (actually every lithograph I have reviewed has been slighlty different). I break the types down into two major categories.
Type I. Has smoother ground in foreground and no smaller stones visible in the right foreground. There are 7-8 figures going up the hill. Type I has the standard titles: "From nature by Heine, Figures by Brown" (left), "T.Sinclair's Lith, Phila" (right), nothing in the middle.
Type IIa. There are 11-13 figures going up the hill. You see a cluster of 5-6 people at the top of the group, not 1-2 as you do in Type I. The title/lettering is the same as in Type I. There are small stones in the right foreground.
Type IIb. Similar to type IIa but the title reads: "From nature by Heine (left), "T. Sinclair's Lith, Phila (Center)", "Figure by Brown" (right).

The portrait of Interpreter Shin appears the same in the lithographs examined. The dark shaded areas to his right and left vary between them. In the large format litho there is a lightly shaded area that extends up 85cm from the top of the chair. In the Medium 1 and medium images that area is not present (just the darker patch). Medium 2 has differently configured shading areas from those found on the other pictures.

Four types have been reviewed.
Type I - The height of the image box is 15.9. The man in the left foreground appears to be touching the monkey.
TY Ia - similar to Type I but a more yellowish tent.
Type II - The height of the image box is 16.4 (significantly higher than type I). The man in the left foreground is not touching the monkey and he appears to be dangling something on a string in front of it.
Type IIa - As type II but with subtle differences. On type IIa you see a rope from the tree to the monkey and it is not seen on II.

I have noted a several variations between individual lithographs with regard to the image on this lithograph. Thus far I have recorded four similar designs but with minor variations. Some have far more white than others. Often the number and arrangement of ships in the harbors varies. The Okinawan man to the far left is sometimes slightly different and the root on the wall just above him is arranged differently. Perhaps the Sinclair Co. lithograph plant had to redraw the lithograph stone more frequently that other companies found necessary. The Type IV has different lettering than you see on Type I - III. Most lithographs are reasonably close in appearance but this is an exception. The Type I and Type II have very different figures. The title "Bridge of Cut Stone & Entrance to a Temple, Simoda" measures 9.9cm on the Type I and 10.6cm on the Type II. On the Type I the title to the right reads "P.S. Duval & Co. Philada.". On the Type II it reads "P.S. Duval & Co. Phil.". In the Type I most of the figures have dark color clothing and are surrounded by a darker background. In the Type II the same figure generally has lighter color clothing and are surrounded by a lighter background.. To see the differences, click here.

The pictures on these lithographs are very similar. The Type I image area measures 16.2~4 along the short axis versus the Type II which measures 16.7. There are more snow covered mountains in the background of Type I than you see in Type II. On Type I the title to the left "From nature by Heine" is visible. On Type II it is faint and only partially visible.

The pictures on these lithographs are very similar. The Large 1 seems to have darker richer color. The mats on the floor have different patterns. On Type I the title to the left "Dag by E. Brown, Jr." is 17cm where it is 20cm on the Large 2.

The pictures on these lithographs are very similar. In Large 1 you can clearly see the masts on the 5 large ships in the outer harbor. In the Large 2 the masts are faint on not visible. In Large 2, these ships in the outer harbor are smaller than on Large 1.
